We are kicking off our first Speaker Series event of 2026 in a very special way – by commemorating the 140th Anniversary of the Sisters of St. Mary Oregon! 

Join us on March 3 for “A 140-year Legacy of Joyful Service: The Changing Times and Lasting Values of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon.

The Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon are a lasting legacy and a beacon of Beaverton and the entire Tualatin Valley. Learn how the remarkable women of SSMO have created a lasting legacy as one of the nation’s longest and most successful Catholic ministries of  prayer, education and health care.

About Sister Adele Marie Altenhofen:

(SSMO) Ministries Corporation was established. Sister Adele Marie Altenhofen was named its first president.

Sister Adele Marie currently serves as President of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Ministries Corporation. The SSMO Min. Corp. provides services that support the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon and their sponsored ministries (Valley Catholic School, Maryville and the SSMO Foundation).

A native Oregonian, Sister Adele Marie, cherishes her rootedness in the close-knit Catholic community of the Portland area. Her ancestors were instrumental in constructing several of the churches in the Archdiocese of Portland, and provided numerous vocations to the priesthood and religious life. She earned a Master of Arts in Teaching, as well as, her undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Spanish from University of Portland where she played on the basketball team. She later earned a Master of Educational Administration from Lewis and Clark. She went on to become a teacher, principal and Motherhouse administrator before being selected to serve as the SSMO Ministries Corporation President.

As President of SSMO Ministries Corporation, Sister Adele Marie leads and oversees all management, financial, programmatic, and planning activities of the SSMO Ministries Corporation in a manner consistent with the Sisters’ charism, mission, vision, and values.
