A lifetime of creative service to God.
April 4, 1927 – October 12, 2025

Sr. Angeline (also known as Sr. M. Edward Clare) was born in North Plains, Oregon, on April 4, 1927 to Henry Sohler and Dora Marie Hermens. She grew up in a strong Catholic family with one brother and five sisters and began her elementary education at Columbia Academy, North Plains. She graduated from St. Mary of the Valley Academy (now Valley Catholic) in Beaverton in 1943.
Sr. Angeline entered the Sisters of Saint Mary of Oregon on August 15, 1943 and professed perpetual vows as a religious Sister on August 15, 1948. She celebrated her 80th Jubilee as a consecrated woman religious in 2023.
In her 43 years as a Catholic school educator, Sr. Angeline fulfilled the SSMO mission to proclaim the Good News of God’s love with creativity and educational excellence. She had a practical, prayer-filled love of her students. Sister Angeline gained her B.S. in Education from Marylhurst University (1956) and M.S. in Education and in Standard Library at Portland State University (1972). She taught in the Archdiocese of Portland schools at St. John (Milwaukie), St. Matthew (Hillsboro), St. Boniface (Sublimity), Sacred Heart (Tillamook), St. Francis (Roy), Sacred Heart (Gervais), Our Lady of Sorrow, Holy Cross (Portland), St. Cecilia (Beaverton), St. Peter (Spokane), Christ the King, (Milwaukie), and Archbishop Howard (Portland). In addition, Sr. Angeline served as a librarian at Valley Catholic High School and assistant resident dean. She was the editor of “SSMO magazine” and “Outlook,” through the SSMO Development Office. Sr. Angeline taught ESOL to the campus staff.

Sr. Angeline’s deep relationship with God and appreciation for God’s creation developed a deep love in her nature and outdoor activities. She was enthusiastic about hiking, skiing, and camping. She was proud to have climbed the Alps during her 50th Jubilee year. As an artist, her simple and clever illustrations depict the various activities and prayerful life of the SSMO Community.
Sr. Angeline Sohler passed away on October, 12, 2025 at the SSMO Motherhouse. She is missed with love by her sisters, Sr. Elizabeth Sohler, SSMO, and Alice Stadelman, her SSMO Community, her nieces and nephews, the SSMO Infirmary caregivers, and friends.
