College Counselor | Joe Bernard, Valley Catholic’s college counselor since 2000, earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Oregon and a master’s degree in student counseling from the University of Portland. With 30 years of college counseling experience, Joe is Oregon’s first school-based Certified Educational Planner, the highest credential possible for college counselors. He chairs the Portland National College Fair, served as President of the Higher Education Consultant Association (HECA), and volunteers on Marquette University’s Admissions advisory board. He served six years on the executive boards of the American Institute of Certified Educational Planners,(AICEP), currently serves the board of the Pacific Northwest Association for College Admission Counseling (PNACAC), and he is a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, (NACAC). Joe holds a charter membership in the Higher Educational Consultants Association, for which he served as vice president for six years. Joe was an admissions officer at the University of Portland for seven years and taught a graduate level college-counseling course for Lewis and Clark College. He enjoys his family, and spending time outdoors, camping, biking, water skiing, scuba diving, gardening and marveling at creation.
