A Day Above Par for the SSMO Foundation’s Whole-in-One Golf Tournament
The cool, partly sunny morning brought plenty of smiles as golfers arrived at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course for the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Foundation’s 13th annual Whole-in-One golf tournament. The tournament supports the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon and their sponsored ministries of Valley Catholic School and Maryville.
A record-setting 140 registered golfers set the tone for the memorable day on the course. A number that was the perfect compliment to the 140th anniversary of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon.
As participants arrived, Valley Catholic High School ambassadors helped caddy bags to carts while Sr. Juana Gutierrez Mares (SSMO leadership), John Matcovich (VCS President), Dr. Sara Bruins (VCHS Principal), K.T. Emerson (VCHS Athletic Director), and SSMO Foundation staff members welcomed both new and returning faces to the course. VCS parents, grandparents and alumni, SSMO campus service providers, board members and even a few teachers and coaches joined in on the day for fun, community building, networking and memory making.

The day kicked-off with 72 carts lined up and Sister Michael Francine Duncan, SSMO Superior General, blessing the crowd for a day above par. With par-fect timing, the cloud cover lifted, hats and sunscreen came out and the warm sunshine beamed down for a picture perfect day on the greens.
For the official send-off, a stretch of student ambassadors and staff high-fived the foursome teams as they took off toward their tee boxes and fairways. Contests at various holes, included: Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin and the Holy-In-One (set at 140 yards for 140 years). A big thank you to our contest hole sponsors, Independent Dispatch and Pacific Office Automation.

The Hole-In-One at hole #14, presented by Leonard Adams and Beaverton Toyota, held golfers in anticipation with the promise of a brand new Toyota 4-Runner for the first person to drive a 165-yard hole-in-one. Golfers took their time checking out the new vehicle and getting a waft of that new car smell before stepping up to the tee box for their shot. No one got it this time, but it was fun to try!
Many thanks to our presenting sponsor, Beaverton Toyota who supported the Whole-in-One tournament and brought excitement to the greens.
A candid shot of each foursome sealed memories of the day at Hole #15, sponsored by LMC Construction.
After a full day of golf, dinner awaited and Sister Adele Marie Altenhofen, SSMO, SSMO Min. Corp. CEO, blessed the meal. As the sun was starting to set, dinner was served and the raffle drawing began, included in the prizes were foursome passes to Oregon Golf Club, suite tickets to the Blazers and Timbers (thank you Pacific Office Automation), hand-made golf covers by Sister Josephine, wine and flower baskets, indoor putting greens and so much more. Awards were given to the top three places from our Blue Flight and White Flight. Blue Flight winners came in at -17, -14 and -13 while our top White Flight teams came in at -3 and -2.
As fun as the giveaways, raffles and contests were, everyone was truly there to have a good time with friends and community, while supporting the Sisters’ education and health care ministries.
The Whole-in-One golf tournament could not have happened without our golfers, sponsors and donors! A huge thank you to everyone who showed up for this event and made it a success. We are blessed to have such a supportive community.
Until next time, happy driving, chipping and putting! We hope to see you next year!
