Sister Janet Slingerland


Sister Janet Slingerland (Sister Stephen) was born and raised in Portland. The oldest of three children, she entered the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon in 1953.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Marylhurst College and a master’s degree in theology from Mount Angel Seminary. 

Sister Janet was an elementary school teacher in Oregon and Washington for 30 years. She also served as vice principal and principal, as well as Dean of the Resident School at St. Mary of the Valley School (now Valley Catholic).

Her professional education continued at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Springs, Maryland and at Washington Theological Union in the District of Columbia. She was certified by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains and received chaplain advanced status from the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, specializing in bereavement. She served at Seattle’s Providence Medical Center and Seattle’s Swedish Medical Center before retiring in 2006.
