A Letter from the SSMO Superior General
Dear Friends, Family, Sisters and Brothers,
Living the Gospel Values is the focus for the Sisters of Saint Mary of Oregon Community this year. There are many challenges in our daily lives and in our world. At times, life may seem chaotic, but we remain a people of hope who are grounded in the Lord.
As Sisters, we strive to remain faithful to our call to be women of prayer, simplicity, and sisterly love. Living in Community invites us to be attentive to the movement of the Spirit among us and to live the Gospel values of compassion, forgiveness, humility, justice, and love. We seek to serve one another with wisdom and care for the whole community.
We, the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, have intentionally chosen to continue this journey together. The road may be rocky at times, but in our hearts, we know that we are called by Jesus through the Gospels, through prayer, and through our relationships with one another. Jesus tells us, “I do not call you servants; I have called you friends.” (John 15:15)
Friendship gives us a glimpse of what God is like. When we strive to be true friends to one another, we experience something of God’s own love. Friendship is something we all need, long for, and hope for. It is one of life’s greatest joys. It also makes us vulnerable to some of our deepest hurts. In friendship, we share confidences, trust one another, develop deep loyalties, and form relationships that can last throughout our lives.
Friendship means being present in the simple moments of life, by sharing laughter and humor, listening to one another, and discovering the mystery and unique gifts of another person. Friendship is important at every age. Without it, life can become lonely, empty, and isolated. Sharing the grace of friendship with another is one of the greatest gifts we can give.
We pray to our God and Father, the source of all life and all love. God has created and formed each of us with a loving hand and a heart that desires relationship and friendship. May we see and embrace the dignity and worth of each person – just as our Lord sees them.
And to each of you reading this: May you know that God delights in you. May you remember that you are precious in God’s eyes and that each of us is worth the loving sacrifice of God’s Son.
May we continue to live the Gospel values by offering one another friendship, compassion, forgiveness, patience, and love.
